Charbonneau

Charbonneau

Manufacturer: Pendleton Woolen Mills
Category: Bed Collections

This beautiful blanket, woven in our American mills, is named after Jean Baptiste Charbonneau. Jean Baptiste was the son of Shoshone guide Sacagawea and French Canadian trapper Toussaint Charbonneau. As the youngest member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition - and quite possibly the most important - he unwittingly protected it from attacks. Because women and infants were never included in war parties, Native Americans assumed the expedition was on a peaceful mission and let it pass without harm. After spending his childhood in St. Louis under the care of expedition leader Captain William Clark, Jean Baptiste lived in Europe until the lure of the American West called him home. A master of four languages, he spent nearly four decades roaming the far West as an interpreter, guide, magistrate, mountain man and gold prospector. The blanket's traditional Native American-inspired graphics honor Charbonneau's Shoshone heritage. Unnapped, sueded trim. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Diamond Desert

Diamond Desert

Manufacturer: Pendleton Woolen Mills
Category: Bed Collections

Traditional Native American geometric weaving inspired the early 1900s blanket design. Beauty and balance, order and harmony are central to the Navajo world view. In this exclusive Pendleton pattern, arrows, triangles and serrated diamonds are arranged in perfect harmony, a reflection of hozho, a Navajo word that embodies the quest for balance in life. The four strong stripes illustrate the balance and contrast between darkness and light. Diamonds represent the four sacred mountains that define the four directions and enclose the Navajo universe in the shape of a diamond. The high desert area bordered by Blanca Peak in Colorado, Mount Taylor in New Mexico, the San Francisco Peaks in Arizona and Hesperus Peak in Colorado is considered the Navajo sacred homeland. Unnapped. Unnapped, sueded trim. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Diamond Ranch Quilt

Diamond Ranch Quilt

Manufacturer: Pendleton Woolen Mills
Category: Bed Collections

As the buffalo disappeared, Northern plains Indians of Montana and the Dakota replaced buffalo robes with quilts. One of their most recognizable designs is Morning Star, adapted in the late 1800s from the traditional Lone Star pattern. Covering most of the quilt top, its eight-point design was extremely difficult to create-the mosaic of tiny diamonds radiating out from the center took long hours of careful cutting, perfect placement and skillful hand-stiching. 100% cotton. Machine washable. Imported. Standard sham fits 20 in. x 26 in. pillow.

Heroic Chief

Heroic Chief

Manufacturer: Pendleton Woolen Mills
Category: Pillow and Shams

A striking silhouette of a Native American Chief is the central image of this unique, circa 1920s design. The feathered headdress was a ceremonial war bonnet worn only by chiefs and warriors. The war bonnet was common among Plains Indian men - Sioux, Crow, Blackfeet, Cheyenne and Cree - but was seldom worn on the battlefield. Reserved for formal occasions, the golden eagle-feather war bonnet was a spiritual symbol of a man's courage and honor. It was a sign of respect that could be bestowed only by the tribe's elders. The bonnet was also believed to protect the wearer. Later, other Native American tribes adopted the headdress as simply a sign of authority. Today, a brave or good deed may still be rewarded with an eagle feather. Napped, felt binding. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Midnight Eyes

Midnight Eyes

Manufacturer: Pendleton Woolen Mills
Category: Bed Collections

This Native American-inspired pattern, woven in our American mills, is a tribute to the creatures of the night. According to Cherokee legend, when the animals and plants were first made they were told to watch and stay awake for seven nights. Just as young men sometimes fast and keep awake during their vision quest. Nearly all the animals made it through the first night, but several dropped off to sleep on the second. Each night thereafter, others nodded off until on the seventh night only the owl, the panther and a few more were still awake. These animals were given the power to see and go about in the dark, and to prey on the birds and animals that must sleep at night. The diamonds in this pattern suggest those keen nocturnal eyes that look fearlessly into the darkness and see all. Unnapped, sueded trim. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Moonlight Mesa

Moonlight Mesa

Manufacturer: Pendleton Woolen Mills
Category: Blankets/Robes/Throws

These blankets are robe size, the size preferred by Native Americans for ceremonial purposes and wrapping about oneself as a robe. They are impressive as wall hangings and practical when folded on a sofa or at the foot of a bed. Felt bound. 82% pure virigin wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

That quiet beauty inspired the Moonlight Mesa pattern, a woven representation of those magnificent desert landscapes. Arrows denote protection, and stylized butterflies symbolize everlasting life. Napped.
