Painted Rock

Painted Rock

Manufacturer: Pendleton Woolen Mills
Category: Blankets/Robes/Throws

From the towering cliffs of the Columbia River Gorge to the canyon walls and caves of the American Southwest, the history of Native Americans is literally written in stone. Thousand-year-old pictographs (paintings) and petroglyphs (carvings) are a virtual library of ancient tales, recording the stories of western tribes for all time. These primitive yet detailed drawings were the inspiration for our Painted Rock pattern, which includes tribal images found throughout the West. Sun wheels and shamen were discovered in California and supernova and stars in New Mexico. Rainbows and hunters represent the Snake River Canyon and buffalo the Plains Indians of Montana. Corn and moon symbols tell us of the Hopi of Arizona. Bear tracks, salmon and the sun were powerful images of Northwest tribes. Our Painted Rock pattern is a visual tribute to the rich artistry and lore of the many tribes of the western United States. Twin is felt-bound, other sizes have sueded fabric trim. Unnapped. 82% pure virgin wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA. Standard sham fits 20 in. x 26 in. pillow.

Charbonneau

Charbonneau

Manufacturer: Pendleton Woolen Mills
Category: Bed Collections

This beautiful blanket, woven in our American mills, is named after Jean Baptiste Charbonneau. Jean Baptiste was the son of Shoshone guide Sacagawea and French Canadian trapper Toussaint Charbonneau. As the youngest member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition - and quite possibly the most important - he unwittingly protected it from attacks. Because women and infants were never included in war parties, Native Americans assumed the expedition was on a peaceful mission and let it pass without harm. After spending his childhood in St. Louis under the care of expedition leader Captain William Clark, Jean Baptiste lived in Europe until the lure of the American West called him home. A master of four languages, he spent nearly four decades roaming the far West as an interpreter, guide, magistrate, mountain man and gold prospector. The blanket's traditional Native American-inspired graphics honor Charbonneau's Shoshone heritage. Unnapped, sueded trim. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Chinle

Chinle

Manufacturer: Pendleton Woolen Mills

The Pendleton Chinle Blanket is woven in Chinle Revival style of Navajo rugs. The rugs were originally named for a trading post town in Arizona, near Canyon de Chelly in the heart of the Navajo Nation. In the 1920s, weavers in the Chinle region revived the banded patterns of the Clasic and Late Classic era of Navajo designs of the late 1880s. The revival rugs used nontraditional colors from vegetal dyes. Chinle weavings were traditionally borderless with horizontal bands of plain stripes alternating with bands of geometric designs. Chevrons, diamonds and stylized squash blossoms were common motifs. The revival rugs became popular, and the Chinle Revival style weaving soon spread to neighboring areas in Arizona and New Mexico. Unnapped, sueded trim. 82% Wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Compass Stripe

Compass Stripe

Manufacturer: Pendleton Woolen Mills
Category: Blankets/Robes/Throws

The directional cross, symbolizing the four cardinal directions, is the defining element in our Compass Stripe blanket. Powers and teachings are ascribed to each direction both literally and symbolically in many Native American cultures. The Lakota assign the seasons - spring comes from the East bringing enlightenment; summer from the South with innocence, fall from the West with power and winter from the North with wisdom. The Apache attribute earth, air, water and fire as well as ancestral spirits and animal totems to the directions. To the Navajo, dawn in the East is our thinking direction, South our planning direction. West is living and acting on our thoughts. The North is a source of satisfaction, it's where we evaluate what we began in the East and decide whether we are on the right path. When these elements are in balance, as in this pattern, all is well with the world. Napped, sueded trim. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Conejos

Conejos

Manufacturer: Pendleton Woolen Mills
Category: Bed Collections

In Conejos County, Colorado, there's an ancient mine known for its unique turquoise - a brilliant shade of emerald green, shot with a matrix of golden stone. In the late 1800s the pioneer settlers who plumbed its depths knew it as Manassa. But perhaps a thousand years earlier, ancient Pueblans worked the mine for its richly colored treasure - green turquoise traded by the Anasazi and used in beads and animal fetishes. In the late 1800s Navajo silversmiths began to fashion this and traditional turquoise into elegant jewelry. Today green turquoise may still be found in southwest Colorado and Nevada. And throughout the Southwest, Navajo artisans continue to create beautiful, sought-after jewelry, some from this stunning gemstone. Our brilliant green blanket commemorates the miners, stonecutters and artisans of the American West and the Native American silversmiths who still fashion these stones into jewelry and talismans. Traditional Native American directional crosses, arrows, diamond shapes and weaving patterns of Navajo, Hopi and Zuni artists are incorporated into a classic 9-element design from our archives. This colorful blanket pattern evokes the artistic traditions of Mexico's Tehuantepec area. The Coyoacan blanket is named for the neighborhood in which Kahlo was born, lived and produced her most famous works. Dawn's Early Light

Dawn's Early Light

Manufacturer: Pendleton Woolen Mills
Category: Blankets/Robes/Throws

"O say can you see by the dawn's early light." These words were penned on the back of an envelope in 1814 by young lawyer and poet Francis Scott Key. Key was held captive on a Royal Navy ship as British ships in Chesapeake Bay bombarded Fort McHenry throughout the night. When dawn broke, the fort was still standing, the American flag still waving. It was a turning point in the war of 1812, and the birth of our national anthem, the "Star Spangled Banner." This blanket, woven in our American mills, commemorates the Bicentennial of that momentous morning in U.S. history. Fifteen red and white stripes and stars represent those on the flag at that time. Striations and imprecise images give the design a vintage American look. Napped. 82% pure virgin wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Clouds of cool blues and purples hover in the sky. A calm, steady rain waters the ground and feeds the lands. Plants, four-legged insects and the Diné beings are nurtured and their thirsts are quenched. Diné (Navajo) artist Gilmore Scott captures the beauty of a female summer rainstorm in this original design for the Pendleton Legendary Collection. Unlike springs male storms that bring downpours, flash floods and thunderstorms, this gentle summer storm is soft and nurturing. Scotts use of colors is strong and bold, echoing the quiet power of Nature and the brilliant high desert landscape. Heroic Chief

Heroic Chief

Manufacturer: Pendleton Woolen Mills
Category: Bed Collections

A striking silhouette of a Native American Chief is the central image of this unique, circa 1920s design. The original, vintage blanket was discovered and sent to us by Indian trade blanket collector and author Barry Friedman. We are delighted to reproduce this fascinating blanket. The feathered headdress was a ceremonial war bonnet worn only by chiefs and warriors. The war bonnet was common among Plains Indian men - Sioux, Crow, Blackfeet, Cheyenne and Cree - but was seldom worn on the battlefield. Reserved for formal occasions, the golden eagle-feather war bonnet was a spiritual symbol of a man's courage and honor. It was a sign of respect that could be bestowed only by the tribe's elders. The bonnet was also believed to protect the wearer. Later, other Native American tribes adopted the headdress as simply a sign of authority and perhaps as a nod to tourism. Today, a brave or good deed may still be rewarded with an eagle feather. Napped, felt binding. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

North Star

North Star

Manufacturer: Pendleton Woolen Mills
Category: Bed Collections

Through the ages, a bright star in the Little Dipper has been a constant source of navigation for the peoples of Earth. The North Star appears stationary, and the Inuit call it Nuuttuittuq, the star that never moves. Paiute legend relates how a brave son named Na-Gah became the star that does not travel and the guiding light for all living creatures. Na-Gah climbed to the top of a high mountain to win his father's respect. The peak was so tall that he found himself high above all the other mountains. When his father came looking for him, he found Na-Gah stuck high on the mountain peak. Not wanting his son to die, his father turned Na-Gah into a star that shines brightly and guides all who can see him. The Native American-inspired central star and the deep colors of this blanket evoke the steady light of the North Star in the night sky. Unnapped, sueded trim. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Rio Concho Saddle Blankets

Rio Concho Saddle Blankets

The Concho River in West Texas was named for the freshwater mussel shells found along its banks. Concho means "shell" in Spanish. The mussel shells were found by the Spanish who explored the area in 1540. Some say it was Franciscan Fathers who later visited the area and named the north branch of the Concho the Rio Concho or River of Shells. Today, concho refers to the embossed shell-shaped metal pieces that decorate Western belts and jewelry. These were the inspiration for this striking blanket pattern with three stylized conchos as the focal point. Unnapped, whipstitch binding. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Supernova

Supernova

Manufacturer: Pendleton Woolen Mills
Category: Bed Collections

An ancient exploding star or supernova is thought to be recorded on Native American rock art. In the summer of 1054 AD, a new star as bright as the full moon appeared for nearly a month. The event was recorded in Chinese, Japanese and Arab documents. And some believe Native Americans in the Southwest observed the event. Scientists have hypothesized that a pictograph of a crescent moon and blazing star on the walls of a cave in Chaco Canyon in New Mexico might represent this supernova. The images created by the Western Anazasi appear to show the conjunction of the Moon and the first appearance of the supernova on July 5, 1054 AD. On that date just before dawn, the new supernova and a crescent moon would have appeared very near each other in the sky over Chaco Canyon. On a rocky mesa above the Rio Chama in northern New Mexico sits the village of Abiquiu. Native Americans inhabited the river valley for thousands of years before the Spanish established a small town here in the early 1700s. Some historians believe Abiquiu was named after a Tewa Pueblo village that existed on the site in 1300 A.D., and there are numerous prehistoric Pueblo sites in the area. Abiquiu is thought to be the beginning of The Old Spanish Trail, linking Santa Fe and Los Angeles. In 1949, Modern artist Georgia O'Keefe was drawn to Abiquiu's mesas and mountains sculpted by wind, water and time. She lived and painted there for more than 40 years, inspired both by the landscape and Native American art and culture. This blanket, woven in our American mills, reflects the beauty of Abiquiu's natural red rock cliffs at sunset, layered in bands of color - gold, brown, purple and maroon. Unnapped, sueded trim. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Arapaho Trail

Arapaho Trail

Manufacturer: Pendleton Woolen Mills
Category: Blankets/Robes/Throws

Arapaho Trail is a spectacular example of a classic nine-element design. The pattern evolved from the traditional banded Chief Stripe and features three rows of three central designs. It originated with the Navajos and gained popularity among other tribes, including the Arpaho. The Arapaho were great traders - their name is thought to have come from the Pawnee word for "traders" - often exchanging furs for blankets. They traveled from Minnesota to Colorado carrying goods on travois. Travois were pulled behind dogs or a horse and consisted of two trailing poles with a net between that carried the load. The part of their route that winds from the prairie through Indian Gulch to Clear Creek Junction became known as the Arapaho Travois Trail. Napped.

Arrowhead

Arrowhead

Manufacturer: Pendleton Woolen Mills
Category: Bed Collections

The intricate, geometric design is created with arrow images, symbols common among Native American tribes. A bundle of five arrows represented the five founding tribes of the Iroquois League. To the Navajo, flint is a sacred stone and arrowheads are said to resemble the tips of lightning bolts thrown by Thunder. Sioux lore tells of Unktomi Tanka (a big spider) who spent his days making flint arrows for the tribe. A ticking sound in the grass indicates that a spider is busy making arrowheads. A Shasta legend relates how the people got arrowheads back in the days when arrowheads were made of pine bark instead of obsidian. Ground Squirrel tricked the arrowheads away from Obsidian Old Man and the sharp new arrows made hunting better. It's no surprise that arrowheads often signified alertness. Arrowheads are often used in designs to signify protection. Unnapped. Sueded trim. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

A striking silhouette of a Native American Chief is the central image of this unique, circa 1920s design. Later, other Native American tribes adopted the headdress as simply a sign of authority. Today, a brave or good deed may still be rewarded with an eagle feather. Napped, felt binding. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Hudson's Bay 6 Point Blanket

Hudson's Bay 6 Point Blanket

Manufacturer: Hudsons Bay Blankets

Legendary blankets that set the standard by which all others are measured

In the late 1700s, wool blankets were so important to comfort and survival that they were used as a form of currency in trading between trappers and Native Americans. Beaver pelts were exchanged for blankets through the Hudson's Bay Company and its outposts throughout Northern Canada.

Hudson's Bay Point Blankets retain the authentic 100% wool quality that has made these blankets legendary. Like those sold in the 18th century, today's blankets are made in England with wool blended from sources in England, Wales, New Zealand, and India. Each type of wool is selected for qualities that help create a water-resistant, soft, warm, and strong final product. The wool is dyed before it is spun and then air- and sun-dried to brighten the colors. These blankets warm the interior of any home, cabin, or cottage. They will keep you and your guests warm and cozy on the coldest nights, just like they've kept generations of trappers, hunters, fur traders, and Native Americans warm and comfortable. 100% wool. 72" x 90". Imported. Dry clean. Of all the products marketed by Bemidji Woolen Mills, Mike Wellner Online Order Specialist #1 Choice is the 6 Point Green and Black Hudson Bay Point Blanket.

For a hundred years, Native Americans have acknowledged births, deaths and major milestones and accomplishments with the gift of a Pendleton blanket.

The Lakota Way of Life is a visual representation of Pte Oyate - the Buffalo Nation. For many Plains Tribes, the buffalo sustained all life. Every part of the animal was used - the meat for food, and hides for robes, tepee covers and shields. Horns were crafted into bowls and arrow points. Fat was rendered for candles and soap. Swift horses, introduced by the Spanish in the 16th century, became essential to the buffalo hunt. For the Lakota, the buffalo story is held in their breath, their songs, stories and homes. In this unique design, a Pendleton Blanket serves as a buffalo robe, keeping the body warm and the spirit strong. The tepee and blanket strips signify the four winds, the world above and below, as well as night and day.

The Lakota Way of Life blanket is based on the art of Jim Yellowhawk, a member of the Cheyenne River Lakota Sioux Tribe. Mr. Yellowhawk lives and works in the beautiful He Sapa Black Hills of South Dakota. Napped and felt bound, 82% pure virgin wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Midnight Eyes

Midnight Eyes

Manufacturer: Pendleton Woolen Mills
Category: Bed Collections

This Native American-inspired pattern, woven in our American mills, is a tribute to the creatures of the night. According to Cherokee legend, when the animals and plants were first made they were told to watch and stay awake for seven nightsjust as young men sometimes fast and keep awake during their vision quest. Nearly all the animals made it through the first night, but several dropped off to sleep on the second. Each night thereafter, others nodded off until on the seventh night only the owl, the panther and a few more were still awake. These animals were given the power to see and go about in the dark, and to prey on the birds and animals that must sleep at night. The diamonds in this pattern suggest those keen nocturnal eyes that look fearlessly into the darkness and see all. Unnapped, sueded trim. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Quill Basket

Quill Basket

Manufacturer: Pendleton Woolen Mills
Category: Bed Collections

The Micmac (Mi'kmaq), a First Nations people of New England and eastern Canada, tell of a long-ago star that fell from the sky into the Atlantic Ocean and crawled to shore. The People called it "gog-wit" which means "eight-legged star fish." The image appeared on petroglyphs in Nova Scotia 500 years ago. It later became the defining motif on Micmac quilled birch basket - and the inspiration for this blanket's central element. Porcupine quills are one of the oldest forms of embellishment found on hides and baskets. The Micmac artisans were so skilled at quillwork, the French called them "Porcupine Indians." Their quill-decorated baskets set the standard for the craft, which flourished for centuries among Eastern, Great Lakes and Plains tribes. Later embroidery traditions using glass beads, which replaced quills in the mid-1800s, were built upon Micmac techniques and designs. This blanket's intricate pattern and subtle colors, woven in our American mills, are a tribute to the ancient art of quilled basketry. Unnapped, sueded trim. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Santa Fe Saxony

Santa Fe Saxony

Manufacturer: Pendleton Woolen Mills

t is said that Spider Woman taught the Diné (Navajo) to weave under the direction of her husband Spider Man. Generations of accomplished Navajo weavers have practiced their skill and shared their gifts with an admiring world. This intricate geometric design references a step in the evolution of Navajo weaving. The opening of the Santa Fe Trail in 1821 brought about many changes from the Classical period. By the 1860s new weaving techniques and available yarns contributed to more elaborate designs. Fine, silky-smooth 3-ply merino yarns from Saxony, Germany, were among those that were imported and began to supplement the natural fleece-colored yarns commonly seen. New yarns made possible exciting variations in colors and sophisticated patterns as seen in this blanket's elaborate terraced meanders, chevrons, zigzags, stepped diamonds and Spider Woman crosses. This blanket was inspired by a fabulous weaving displayed at a renowned museum in Taos, New Mexico, that museum specializes in the Native American, Hispanic and international art. Ikat uses a resist-dying process similar to tie-dye on either the warp or weft fibers. Dye is applied before the cloth is weven to create the pattern. Authentic Ikat fabrics are woven by hand on narrow looms. Our jacquard loom interpretation of traditional Ikat captures the marvelous depth of color and subtlety inherent in this ancient art from. All Night Meeting

All Night Meeting

Manufacturer: Pendleton Woolen Mills
Category: Blankets/Robes/Throws

This design is from an original pen-and-ink and colored pencil drawing by Yankton Sioux artist Joseph Chamberlain. The artist is inspired by stories from his childhood and is committed to passing the old teachings to the next generation. His work often portrays spiritual aspects of Plains Indians. All Night Meeting represents a meeting traditional among Lakota, Nakota and Dakota tribes, a gathering at which members drum, pray and meditate. The seven figures in the meeting and the seven Water Birds represent the Seven Fires shared by the peoples on their journey to the Plains. The Seven Council Fires became the governing group of the seven tribes of the Sioux Nation. The two warriors hold a gourd rattle, small drum and other items used during the meeting. Water Birds are a symbol of the renewal of life, the rain and rivers that feed us. Moon and Sun signify the all night nature of the meeting. Napped. Felt-bound. 82% pure virgin wool/18% cotton. Celebrate the Horse

Celebrate the Horse

Manufacturer: Pendleton Woolen Mills
Category: Blankets/Robes/Throws

For a century, Pendleton Woolen Mills has woven the legends and symbols of Native American tribes into beautiful blankets. Native Americans were our first and remain our most loyal customers. In the early 20th century, Pendleton was among the few American mills making blankets specifically for the Indian trade. A Pendleton blanket continues to signify honor and respect. For a hundred years, Native Americans have acknowledged births, deaths and major milestones and accomplishments with the gift of a Pendleton blanket.

A brave warrior astride a swift steed thunders across the plain. Similar vivid images were painted on buffalo hides by Plains Indians in the 1800s. Our Celebrate the Horse blanket is based on a design from the Blackfoot tribe, expert horsemen who called the animal "elk-horse" for its great size. The arrival of the horse, bought to the Americans by 16th-century Spanish Conquistadors, changed forever the culture of Native Americans, encourging migration, trading, herding and hunting.

Each blanket has a sueded commemorative lable telling the design's story. All blankets are napped, felt bound, 82% pure virgin wool and 18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Suwanee Stripe

Suwanee Stripe

Manufacturer: Pendleton Woolen Mills
Category: Bed Collections

This colorful blanket salutes the patchwork artistry of the Seminole Indian women. From the 1700s, the Suwanee River area of what is now the southeastern United States was home to the Seminole Indian tribes. The first versions of Seminole patchwork appeared in the late 1800s and were born of necessity. When cloth was scarce, remnants of cotton bolts were cut into small strips and hand sewn into larger pieces for "strip clothing." The result was functional, wearable art. The introduction of the sewing machine during the early 20th century revolutionized Seminole patchwork. The technique flourished as tight machine stitching allowed more and more elaborate patterns. Strips of colored cloth were cut and repositioned into intricate patterns of squares, rectangles, diamonds and triangles. Brilliant colors like this sawtooth design were often contrasted with a black background. The Suwanee blanket is a tribute to the sophisticated symmetry of Seminole patchwork, an art form still practiced today. Unnapped. Sueded trim. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry Clean. Made in the USA.

Hudson's Bay 4 Point Blanket

Hudson's Bay 4 Point Blanket

100% wool. 72" x 90". Paul Bunyan Blanket

Paul Bunyan Blanket

Manufacturer: Bemidji Woolen Mills
Category: Blankets

Using quality American craftsmanship, Bemidji Woolen Mills has reproduced this legendary Paul Bunyan Blanket. 100% Pure Wool, jacquard woven. A collector's item.

A Story About
A "Paul Bunyan Playground" Couple

In the late 1930's tourism became a primary industry of the Bemidji area. The people relied on their vacationers. This is a story of a "Paul Bunyan Playground" couple.
Frances and Art Christenson with their two daughters spent summer vacations at Balm Lake for many years. Operating a radio and electric shop in Concordia, Kansas, they decided to sell the business and bought Balm Lake Resort in 1941. The resort had five cabins and no electricity. They moved into the log cabin closest to the lake which had spaces between the logs. This was remedied soon by stuffing with askum (an insulating material). The roads to Bemidji were gravel, taking about two hours to cover thirty miles.
The Christensons began the reconstruction of the resort, but then the war came. They closed up the place and headed for California to work for Henry Kaiser Shipyards for two years. After the return they continued the work, making the resort into eight cabins eventually. Tourists came from all over the country, mostly from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Kansas. Many repeated their stay every summer. Guests liked the rustic atmosphere, family oriented, peace and quiet, and friendliness. After getting the place really going good, Art died of a heart attack in 1955. He thorougly enjoyed the country and loved his fishing. Frances felt she had to do something for living so decided to keep operating the resort, where she still is today at 91 years of age.
She's sold off the resort cabins and lots but still has the original log home and two older cabins for her personal guests. In 1974 she had a new home built up the hill overlooking the lake. From there she keeps track of what is going on - boats, fishing. the birds, etc. During one of their last vacations in 1930's, they purchased a special wool blanketfor $4.98. This blanket bears the "Paul Bunyan Playground" insignia. This has been repeated and prepared by the Bemidji Woolen Mills, commemorating the 1996 Bemidji Centennial.
