The traditions and activities of the Iñupiat, today, as in the past, revolve around the changing of the seasons. This blanket, inspired by the artwork of Larry Ahvakana, celebrates the arrival of the sun back to the Arctic and the start of hunting season. The Iñupiat mark this special time with the Messenger Feast—a ceremony where the spirits of the past season's harvest are ushered back into the spirit world. Today, the celebration fosters cultural pride and the regeneration of traditional values. The Ribbon Dance is the first ritual that opens up the most sacred Seminole ceremony, the Green Corn Festival. The tribeswomen wear traditional patchwork skirts and tunics and swirl ribbons around the sacred fire to renew the flame for the coming year. This blanket captures the energy and vibrancy of the Ribbon Dance and serves as an homage to traditional patchwork design. This blanket is a collaboration between Pendleton Woolen Mills and the American Indian College Fund. A portion of the proceeds from this blanket will help ensure that young Native students receive the scholarships they need to attend tribal college.

Saltillo Diamond

Saltillo Diamond

Manufacturer: Pendleton Woolen Mills

This pattern echoes the influences on the Rio Grande weavers of New Mexico, who produced cotton weavings as early as 800 AD. When churro sheep arrived in the region in 1540, shepherds, spinners and weavers elevated utilitarian weaving to art through color and pattern. The Saltillo Diamond, a Mexican motif, was adopted into later Rio Grande weavings. Grande blankets were made of two strips joined in the middle by the Costura del Centro, or central seam. Napped, whipstitch trim. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.
Note: Pattern will run vertically.
