Rio Concho Pillows
Category: Pillow and Shams

The Concho River in West Texas was named for the freshwater mussel shells found along its banks. Concho means "shell" in"Spanish. The mussel shells were found by the Spanish who explored the area in 1540. Some say it was Franciscan Fathers who later visited the area and named the north branch of the Concho the Rio Concho or River of Shells. Today, concho refers to the embossed shell-shaped metal pieces that decorate Western belts and jewelry. Unnapped, whipstitch binding. 82% wool/18% cotton with feather fill. Dry clean. Buffalo Creation Story - Legendary Collection

Buffalo Creation Story - Legendary Collection
Category: Blankets/Robes/Throws

For a century, Pendleton Woolen Mills has woven the legends and symbols of Native American tribes into beautiful blankets. Native Americans were our first and remain our most loyal customers. In the early 20th century, Pendleton was among the few American mills making blankets specifically for the Indian trade. A Pendleton blanket continues to signify honor and respect. For a hundred years, Native Americans have acknowledged births, deaths and major milestones and accomplishments with the gift of a Pendleton blanket.

Buffalos are not typically associated with Navajo culture. So when contemporary Navajo artist Andrew Hobson discovered a story of how the buffalo evolved in Navajo creation stories, he was fascinated. Hobson’s original painting of the Buffalo-Who-Never-Dies of the White Buffalo Tribe inspired this Pendleton blanket. In the tale, Buffalo became angry with Holy Man for having two buffalo women as his wives. Holy Man killed the angry buffalo with magic arrows and wands. But to his dismay, all the buffalos began to die. Then sad, Holy Man brought the buffalo back to life and showed him how to revive all the other buffalo. The central figure shows the angry buffalo fractured in pieces to symbolize his death and journey back to life. Four buffalo tribes are shown inside protective medicine hoops, and the four sacred mountain ranges of the Navajo surround the central buffalo. The artist frames the work in the abstract rainbow symbolizing his personal Yeii, or protective deity. Napped. Felt bound. 82% pure virgin wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Heroic Chief Leather Backpack

Heroic Chief Leather Backpack
Category: Bags

The striking silhouette of a Native American Chief from a vintage 1920s pattern is so striking we brought it back on a new blanket. We loved it so much we wanted to take it everywhereso we put it on a backpack, too. The feathered headdress was a ceremonial war bonnet worn only by chiefs and warriors. The war bonnet was common among Plains Indian menSioux, Crow, Blackfeet, Cheyenne and Creebut was seldom worn on the battlefield. Reserved for formal occasions, the golden eagle-feather war bonnet was a spiritual symbol of a man's courage and honor. It was a sign of respect that could be bestowed only by the tribe's elders. The bonnet was also believed to protect the wearer. Later, other Native American tribes adopted the headdress as simply a sign of authority. Today, a brave or good deed may still be rewarded with an eagle feather.

Crow Creek Quilt

Crow Creek Quilt
Category: Bed Collections

In the early days, Plains Indians illustrated their lives and adventures on buffalo hides. As the buffalo disappeared, and paper and ink were introduced, they replaced buffalo robes with ledger drawings and later quilts. Our Crow Creek quilt recalls the pictorial imagery used in the drawings and early Sioux quilts. It depicts scenes of everyday Indian life- hunting, game birds, butterflies, deer and even a horse-drawn travoisa, a common means of transport. The lively images are surrounded by a fanciful border of flowers and birds. 100% cotton. Machine washable. Imported.

Compass Stripe

Compass Stripe
Category: Bed Collections

The directional cross, symbolizing the four cardinal directions, is the defining element in our Compass Stripe blanket. Powers and teachings are ascribed to each direction both literally and symbolically in many Native American cultures. The Lakota assign the seasons - spring comes from the East bringing enlightenment; summer from the South with innocence, fall from the West with power and winter from the North with wisdom. The Apache attribute earth, air, water and fire as well as ancestral spirits and animal totems to the directions. To the Navajo, dawn in the East is our thinking direction, South our planning direction. West is living and acting on our thoughts. The North is a source of satisfaction, it's where we evaluate what we began in the East and decide whether we are on the right path. When these elements are in balance, as in this pattern, all is well with the world. Napped, sueded trim. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Through the ages, a bright star in the Little Dipper has been a constant source of navigation for the peoples of Earth. The North Star appears stationary, and the Inuit call it Nuuttuittuq, the star that never moves. Paiute legend relates how a brave son named Na-Gah became the star that does not travel and the guiding light for all living creatures. Na-Gah climbed to the top of a high mountain to win his father's respect. The peak was so tall that he found himself high above all the other mountains. When his father came looking for him, he found Na-Gah stuck high on the mountain peak. Big Dipper

Big Dipper
Category: Kids

The Big Dipper is also known as the Big Bear. Many Native American cultures saw the Big Dipper stars as a bear. A Kiowa legend tells of seven sisters and a brother who lived where there were many bears. One day, the sisters were playing with their brother who pretended to be a bear. Then magically, he turned into a bear and began to chase the girls. They jumped on a big rock shouting, "save us!" The rock heard them and grew higher and higher, keeping them out of the bear's reach. Soon they touched the sky and became seven stars in a group shaped like a bear - The Big Dipper. In winter the seven stars are just above the very high rock called Tso-aa, also known as Devils Tower. It marks the spot where the Kiowa began their southern migration. On the sides of the rock the claw marks made by the bear can still be seen. Woven in our American mills. Felt bound. 82% pure virgin wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA. Napped.

Raven Sunburst

Raven Sunburst
Category: Blankets/Robes/Throws

According to a Steilacoom, in the beginning, Grey Eagle kept the sun, moon, stars, fresh water and fire hidden from the people. Then Raven fell in love with Grey Eagle’s beautiful daughter. To please her, he turned himself into a snow-white bird, so she invited him into her father’s lodge. When Raven saw the sun and moon, he stole them and escaped through a smoke hole in the house. The Saxony Hills Blanket references the changing landscape of Navajo weaving in the 1800s. Spanish explorers had introduced Churro sheep to the Southwest in the late 17th century. The Churro bred by the Navajo produced a somewhat coarse, long-staple wool that was hand-spun and woven into shoulder robes or blankets, shirts and sashes. Hand-spun wool from these animals was the main source of yarn for Navajo blankets until the 1860s. Then Saxony yarns arrived in the Southwest by way of the Santa Fe Trail and later the railroad. By the mid-1900s, Saxony yarns were used by the Navajos for general weaving. The Saxony Hills Blanket incorporates traditional, geometric Navajo motifs—diamonds, stepped triangles and Spider Woman cross patterns. Unnapped.

By the end of the Seminole Wars in 1858, the Seminole population of Florida was reduced from thousands to a few hundred. Most had been driven out of Florida, but small bands remained in the Everglades and Big Cypress Swamp. There they retained their culture–farming, hunting alligators and building thatch-roofed homes called chickees. They traveled in dugout canoes made from cypress logs, visiting trading posts along the Miami River with pelts and egret plumes to trade for supplies. When the first sewing machines arrived, Seminole women began making intricate colorful patchwork by sewing long strips of fabric together. In 1928 the Tamiami Trail, the highway from Tampa to Miami, opened and the Seminole saw new trade opportunities. They took advantage of the tourist market for crafts such as patchwork and palmetto dolls. Their entrepreneurial success along the Tamiami Trail is a testimony to Seminole creativity and resilience.

Native American bandolier bags were inspired by the cartridge bags carried by European soldiers. The designs were created using European glass trade beads instead of the porcupine quills of the old days. The bags themselves were usually fashioned from cotton, wool, velvet or leather. Bright River

Bright River

The Bright River blanket is a brilliant interpretation of the Navajo weaving style known as the Eye Dazzler. In it vibrant color flows and indulates like sunset reflected on the waters of a Southwest river. Mesmerzing designs such as these appeared during the Transitional period (1880-1895) when Navajo weavers shifted from making blankets to crafting rugs. During that time traders introduced Germantrown yarns via the Santa Fe Railroad. The colorful, 4-ply wool yarns were produced at textile mills in Germantown, Pennsylvania. Unlike traditional handspun yarns, these new yarns boasted consistent textures and fabulours new colors from commercial aniline dyes. The encourgeed experimentation, innovation and creativity among the weavers. Intricate new designs were influnenced by the dramatic serapes woven in northern Mexico. Borrowing from the elaborate serrated diamonds of Rio Grande/Saltillo serapes, navajo weavers created eye-dazzling optical effects in brilliant new color palettes. Coyote and Eagle borrow the box of light and go hunting. Soon curious Coyote opens the box. The moon and sun escape, taking with them the light and warmth. And that’s how Winter began.

A brave warrior astride a swift steed thunders across the plain. Similar vivid images were painted on buffalo hides by Plains Indians in the 1800s. Our Celebrate the Horse blanket is based on a design from the Blackfoot tribe, expert horsemen who called the animal "elk-horse" for its great size. The arrival of the horse, bought to the Americans by 16th-century Spanish Conquistadors, changed forever the culture of Native Americans, encourging migration, trading, herding and hunting.

Each blanket has a sueded commemorative lable telling the design's story. All blankets are napped, felt bound, 82% pure virgin wool and 18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

The Circle Of Life, or Elders blanket, is in honor of all tribal Elders, the Wisdom Keepers who hand down the teachings and spiritual direction to the children. The design represents all colors of humankind, the color of Mother Earth, the sun and other circular celestial bodies and the four directions of life.

Each blanket has a sueded commemorative lable telling the design's story. All blankets are napped, felt bound, 82% pure virgin wool and 18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

    Creation Turtle - Legendary Collection

    Creation Turtle - Legendary Collection
    Category: Blankets/Robes/Throws

For a century, Pendleton Woolen Mills has woven the legends and symbols of Native American tribes into beautiful blankets. Native Americans were our first and remain our most loyal customers. In the early 20th century, Pendleton was among the few American mills making blankets specifically for the Indian trade. A Pendleton blanket continues to signify honor and respect. For a hundred years, Native Americans have acknowledged births, deaths and major milestones and accomplishments with the gift of a Pendleton blanket.

The Turtle blanket is in recognition of the Iroquois Confederacy. Inspired by the Oneida, Seneca, Mohawk, Cayuga, Onondaga and Tuscoarora Nations, the Turtle design represents the Iroquois legend that the world was created on the shell of the Great Turtle. The Turtle was the only one with enough strength who could support the earth on its back, says the legend. And the earth grew larger until it became the whole world. 82% pure virgin wool/18% cotton warp. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Clouds of cool blues and purples hover in the sky. A calm, steady rain waters the ground and feeds the lands. Plants, four-legged insects and the Diné beings are nurtured and their thirsts are quenched. Diné (Navajo) artist Gilmore Scott captures the beauty of a female summer rainstorm in this original design for the Pendleton Legendary Collection. Unlike spring’s male storms that bring downpours, flash floods and thunderstorms, this gentle summer storm is soft and nurturing. Scott’s use of colors is strong and bold, echoing the quiet power of Nature and the brilliant high desert landscape. The artist’s philosophy that “beauty is simple design and the harmony of color” is evident in this unique blanket that's woven in our American mills. Napped. Felt bound. 82% pure virgin wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

The Lakota Way of Life is a visual representation of Pte Oyate - the Buffalo Nation. For many Plains Tribes, the buffalo sustained all life. Every part of the animal was used - the meat for food, and hides for robes, tepee covers and shields. Horns were crafted into bowls and arrow points. Fat was rendered for candles and soap. Swift horses, introduced by the Spanish in the 16th century, became essential to the buffalo hunt. For the Lakota, the buffalo story is held in their breath, their songs, stories and homes. In this unique design, a Pendleton Blanket serves as a buffalo robe, keeping the body warm and the spirit strong. The tepee and blanket strips signify the four winds, the world above and below, as well as night and day.

The Lakota Way of Life blanket is based on the art of Jim Yellowhawk, a member of the Cheyenne River Lakota Sioux Tribe. Mr. Yellowhawk lives and works in the beautiful He Sapa Black Hills of South Dakota. Napped and felt bound, 82% pure virgin wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Our Heroic Chief 16 oz. stainless steel travel mug has a striking silhouette of a Native American Chief as the central image of this unique, circa 1920s design. The feathered headdress was a ceremonial war bonnet worn only by chiefs and warriors. The war bonnet was common among Plains Indian men - Sioux, Crow, Blackfeet, Cheyenne and Cree - but was seldom worn on the battlefield. Gacefully tapered to fit most cup holders. Hand wash for best results. Gift boxed. Imported.

This beautiful blanket, woven in our American mills, is named after Jean Baptiste Charbonneau. Jean Baptiste was the son of Shoshone guide Sacagawea and French Canadian trapper Toussaint Charbonneau. As the youngest member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition - and quite possibly the most important - he unwittingly protected it from attacks. Because women and infants were never included in war parties, Native Americans assumed the expedition was on a peaceful mission and let it pass without harm. After spending his childhood in St. Louis under the care of expedition leader Captain William Clark, Jean Baptiste lived in Europe until the lure of the American West called him home. A master of four languages, he spent nearly four decades roaming the far West as an interpreter, guide, magistrate, mountain man and gold prospector. The blanket's traditional Native American-inspired graphics honor Charbonneau's Shoshone heritage. Unnapped, sueded trim. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

    Arapaho Trail

    Arapaho Trail

Arapaho Trail Blanket is a spectacular example of a classic nine-element design. The pattern evolved from the traditional banded Chief Stripe and features three rows of three central designs. It originated with the Navajos and gained popularity among other tribes, including the Arapaho. The Arapaho were great traders – their name is thought to have come from the Pawnee word for “traders” – often exchanging furs for blankets. They traveled from Minnesota to Colorado carrying goods on travois – their version of a trailer. Travois were pulled behind dogs or a horse and consisted of two trailing poles with a net between that carried the load. The part of their route that winds from the prairie through Indian Gulch to Clear Creek Junction became known as the Arapaho Travois Trail. Napped. Felt-bound. 82% pure virgin wool/18% cotton. The Micmac (Mi'kmaq), a First Nations people of New England and eastern Canada, tell of a long-ago star that fell from the sky into the Atlantic Ocean and crawled to shore. The People called it "gog-wit" which means "eight-legged star fish." The image appeared on petroglyphs in Nova Scotia 500 years ago. It later became the defining motif on Micmac quilled birch basket - and the inspiration for this blanket's central element. Porcupine quills are one of the oldest forms of embellishment found on hides and baskets. The Micmac artisans were so skilled at quillwork, the French called them "Porcupine Indians." Their quill-decorated baskets set the standard for the craft, which flourished for centuries among Eastern, Great Lakes and Plains tribes. Later embroidery traditions using glass beads, which replaced quills in the mid-1800s, were built upon Micmac techniques and designs. This blanket's intricate pattern and subtle colors, woven in our American mills, are a tribute to the ancient art of quilled basketry. Unnapped, sueded trim. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. It is said that Spider Woman taught the Dine(Navajo) to weave under the direction of her husband Spider Man. Generations of accomplished Navajo weavers have practiced their skill and shared their gifts with an admiring world. This intricate geometric design references a step in the evolution of Navajo weaving. The opening of the Santa Fe Trail in 1821 brought about many changes from the Classical period. By the 1860s new weaving techniques and available yarns contributed to more elaborate designs. Fine, silky-smooth 3-ply merino yarns from Saxony, Germany, were among those that were imported and began to supplement the natural fleece-colored yarns commonly seen. New yarns made possible exciting variations in colors and sophisticated patterns as seen in this blanket's elaborate terraced meanders, chevrons, zigzags, stepped diamonds and Spider Woman crosses. They are impressive as wall hangings and practical when folded on a sofa or at the foot of a bed. Felt bound. 82% pure virigin wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

The Bright River blanket is a brilliant interpretation of the Navajo weaving style known as the Eye Dazzler. In it vibrant color flows and undulates like sunset reflected on the waters of a Southwest river. Mesmerizing designs such as these appeared during the Transitional period (1880-1895) when Navajo weavers shifted from making blankets to crafting rugs. During that time traders introduced Germantown yarns via the Santa Fe Railroad. The colorful, 4-ply wool yarns were produced at textile mills in Germantown, Pennsylvania. Unlike traditional handspun yarns, these new yarns boasted consistent textures and fabulous new colors from commercial aniline dyes. They encouraged experimentation, innovation and creativity among the weavers. Intricate new designs were influenced by the dramatic serapes woven in northern Mexico. Borrowing from the elaborate serrated diamonds of Rio Grande/Saltillo serapes, Navajo weavers created eye-dazzling optical effects in brilliant new color palettes. Unnapped, Whipstitched.

"O say can you see by the dawn's early light." These words were penned on the back of an envelope in 1814 by young lawyer and poet Francis Scott Key. Key was held captive on a Royal Navy ship as British ships in Chesapeake Bay bombarded Fort McHenry throughout the night. When dawn broke, the fort was still standing, the American flag still waving. It was a turning point in the war of 1812, and the birth of our national anthem, the "Star Spangled Banner." This blanket, woven in our American mills, commemorates the Bicentennial of that momentous morning in U.S. history. Fifteen red and white stripes and stars represent those on the flag at that time. Striations and imprecise images give the design a vintage American look. Napped. 82% pure virgin wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Some say it was Franciscan Fathers who later visited the area and named the north branch of the Concho the Rio Concho or River of Shells. Heroic Chief

    Heroic Chief
    Category: Pillow and Shams

A striking silhouette of a Native American Chief is the central image of this unique, circa 1920s design. The feathered headdress was a ceremonial war bonnet worn only by chiefs and warriors. The war bonnet was common among Plains Indian men - Sioux, Crow, Blackfeet, Cheyenne and Cree - but was seldom worn on the battlefield. Napped, felt binding. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

This Native American-inspired pattern, woven in our American mills, is a tribute to the creatures of the night. According to Cherokee legend, when the animals and plants were first made they were told to watch and stay awake for seven nights. Just as young men sometimes fast and keep awake during their vision quest. Nearly all the animals made it through the first night, but several dropped off to sleep on the second. Each night thereafter, others nodded off until on the seventh night only the owl, the panther and a few more were still awake. These animals were given the power to see and go about in the dark, and to prey on the birds and animals that must sleep at night. The diamonds in this pattern suggest those keen nocturnal eyes that look fearlessly into the darkness and see all. Unnapped, sueded trim. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

On a rocky mesa above the Rio Chama in northern New Mexico sits the village of Abiquiu. Native Americans inhabited the river valley for thousands of years before the Spanish established a small town here in the early 1700s. Some historians believe Abiquiu was named after a Tewa Pueblo village that existed on the site in 1300 A.D., and there are numerous prehistoric Pueblo sites in the area. Abiquiu is thought to be the beginning of The Old Spanish Trail, linking Santa Fe and Los Angeles. In 1949, Modern artist Georgia O'Keefe was drawn to Abiquiu's mesas and mountains sculpted by wind, water and time. She lived and painted there for more than 40 years, inspired both by the landscape and Native American art and culture. This blanket, woven in our American mills, reflects the beauty of Abiquiu's natural red rock cliffs at sunset, layered in bands of color - gold, brown, purple and maroon.
