The traditions and activities of the Iñupiat, today, as in the past, revolve around the changing of the seasons. This blanket, inspired by the artwork of Larry Ahvakana, celebrates the arrival of the sun back to the Arctic and the start of hunting season. The Iñupiat mark this special time with the Messenger Feast—a ceremony where the spirits of the past season's harvest are ushered back into the spirit world. Today, the celebration fosters cultural pride and the regeneration of traditional values. This blanket is a collaboration between Pendleton Woolen Mills and the American Indian College Fund to honor and reawaken a vital part of Native history. A portion of the proceeds will help provide scholarships for students attending tribal colleges. 82% pure virgin wool/18% cotton. Unnapped. Felt bound. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Shared Spirits - Legendary Collection

Shared Spirits - Legendary Collection

Manufacturer: Pendleton Woolen Mills
Category: Blankets/Robes/Throws

For more than a century, Pendleton Woolen Mills has woven the legends and symbols of Native American tribes into beautiful blankets. Native Americans were our first and remain our most loyal customers. In the early 20th century, Pendleton was among the few American mills making blankets specifically for the Indian trade. A Pendleton blanket continues to signify honor and respect. For a hundred years, Native Americans have acknowledged births, deaths and major milestones and accomplishments with the gift of a Pendleton blanket.

This brilliantly colored design incorporates imagery that is universal among the Native peoples. The sun, moon, stars and rain clouds represent an honored relationship with the spiritual world of the cosmos. Native American reverence for the natural world is represented by both flora – corn, squash, beans and tobacco – and fauna – buffalo, bear, elk and eagle. The dynamic central image is a sacred circle filled with a cross, a universal symbol of the origin of humankind and the four directions that guide us on our journey. Each blanket has a sueded commemorative label telling the design's story. All blankets are napped, felt bound, 82% pure virgin wool and 18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Hudson's Bay 8 Point Blanket

Hudson's Bay 8 Point Blanket

Manufacturer: Hudsons Bay Blankets

Legendary blankets that set the standard by which all others are measured

In the late 1700s, wool blankets were so important to comfort and survival that they were used as a form of currency in trading between trappers and Native Americans. Beaver pelts were exchanged for blankets through the Hudson's Bay Company and its outposts throughout Northern Canada.

Hudson's Bay Point Blankets retain the authentic 100% wool quality that has made these blankets legendary. Like those sold in the 18th century, today's blankets are made in England with wool blended from sources in England, Wales, New Zealand, and India. Each type of wool is selected for qualities that help create a water-resistant, soft, warm, and strong final product. The wool is dyed before it is spun and then air- and sun-dried to brighten the colors. These blankets warm the interior of any home, cabin, or cottage. They will keep you and your guests warm and cozy on the coldest nights, just like they've kept generations of trappers, hunters, fur traders, and Native Americans warm and comfortable. 100% wool. Imported. Dry clean.
