The Mississippi River begins it's journey here at Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota. At this point you can easily walk across it's 20 to 30 foot width with the gentle flowing waters. The river flows north to Bemidji, which is the first city on the river, before turning south on it's way to the Gulf of Mexico. The river gets it's name from the Ojibwe Misi - ziibi, meaning "Great River". In 1891 Itasca State Park was established to preserve remnant stands of virgin pine and to protect the basin around the Mississippi's source. Itasca is Minnesota's oldest state park. Many visitors have had their picture taken beside the iconic Mississippi headwaters monument, a tall tree stump painted brown with carved yellow lettering.
